There are four categories of membership within ANZATSA. These comprise:
Clinical Members
The Clinical category is for members whose primary role in their work with children, adolescents, and adults who have sexually abused and/or victim/survivors of sexual abuse, is to be involved in assessment, treatment and management interventions. These people will be professionally qualified and registered or associated with a relevant governing professional body which is approved by ANZATSA.
It is the onus and responsibility for Clinical members to:
- To be a member of, or subject to an ANZATSA approved governing professional body
- Work only within the scope and boundaries of their qualifications
- Work with appropriate professional supervision and support
- Be covered by appropriate professional liability and indemnity insurance
- Be responsible for their ongoing professional development and competence
In New Zealand Clinical Members must be able to provide evidence of full and current membership to at least one of the following professional groups:
- Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists
- The New Zealand Association of Child and Adolescent Psychotherapists (Incorporated)
- The New Zealand Psychologists Board
- New Zealand Association of Counsellors Incorporated (Te Roopu Kaiwhiriwhiri o Aotearoa)
- Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers Incorporated (Tangata Whenua Takawaenga o Aotearoa)
- New Zealand Association of Psychotherapists Incorporated
- Other relevant groups as approved by ANZATSA
In Australia Clinical Members must be able to provide evidence of full and current membership to at least one of the following professional groups:
- Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists
- Australian Psychological Society
- State-regulated Psychologists Registration Boards
- Australian Association of Social Workers
- Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia
- Other relevant groups as approved by ANZATSA
Other than this, Clinical Membership continues to require no less than two years of supervised clinical experience directly with sexual abuse behaviours or sexual victimisation or both – including a minimum of 2000 hours. Special circumstances exist for equivalency where clinical members are able to provide evidence of extensive relevant experience, and/or relevant research expertise.
Clinical Associate Members
The requirements for this category of membership are as those for the Clinical category without supervised clinical experience requirement of 2000 hours.
Affiliate Members
ANZATSA recognises that there are many people whose primary role is non-clinical in their work with children, adolescents, and adults who have sexually abused and/or victim/survivors of sexual abuse. ‘Affiliate members’ are mainly involved in the social work support, management, placement and care of children, adolescents, and adults who have sexually abused and sexual abuse victims/ survivors and their families. As ANZATSA is not a supervisory body, ‘Affiliate members’ are subject to regulation of an approved supervisory body. Approved supervisory bodies for the ‘Affiliate’ category in New Zealand include:
- The New Zealand Probation Service (for probation officers)
- Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers Incorporated (Tangata Whenua Takawaenga o Aotearoa)
- The New Zealand Prison Service (for prison officers)
- Child, Youth & Family
- Barnardos NZ - (sex offence specific youth residential service providers)
- And other relevant groups as approved by ANZATSA
Approved supervisory bodies for the ‘Affiliate’ category in Australia include:
- The corrective services institutions in each State
- The juvenile justice departments in each state
- Health departments in each state
- Community Services departments in each state
- Disability services departments in each state
- Various NGO providing care services, such as (but not limited to): Life without barriers & Barnardos
- Australian Association of Social Workers
General Members
This category is for members, who do not yet meet the criteria outlined for ‘Clinical’, ‘Clinical Associate’, ‘Affiliate’ membership, or who are not are involved in the assessment, treatment and/ or management of child sexual offenders and/or victim/survivors of child sexual abuse, but are have an interest in the area. It is also open to all persons, from fields such as policy, research, the police, law, custodial and so on. This category also includes students and others who have not yet completed their full professional qualifications or training.
