Working with Registered Sex Offenders: Not just police business

Dr Karla Lopez is the Senior Forensic Psychologist for the Sex Offender Registry within the State Intelligence Division at Victoria Police. Over her 15 years of work in the sex offender field she has been involved in therapeutic, program development and community supervision roles pertaining to a range of offender groups including, youth, females, intellectually disabled and other complex, high risk adult sex offenders. As well as her eight and a half years within Victoria''s specialist sex offender program, she has provided assessments and expert testimony in matters involving dangerous offenders under the Serious Sex Offender (Detention and Supervision) Act 2009.

Dr Lopez developed Victoria Police's Sex Offender Management framework designed to enhance police practice in the management of registered sex offenders in the community. She currently leads a team of dedicated psychologists and offender management specialists providing risk management consultancy to operational detectives supervising registered sex offenders. Her current research involves the validation of a newly formulated dynamic risk assessment tool designed specifically for police use with a focus on adding incremental value to the existing static risk measure.
